What it measures

The BAT-12 measures four dimensions, each scored separately, because burnout is not one thing:

Answers use a five-point frequency scale, from "never" to "always".

How to read your result

You see your four scores and what each dimension means, with the interpretation cited.

And no cut-off score, on purpose

This site does not apply the BAT's clinical cut-offs. A cut-off is a clinical judgement made with the interview and the full context in the room — not something a self-check can hand you. What you get instead is the map of your four dimensions, which is what makes the next conversation useful.

Who diagnoses burnout

A health professional. With an interview, a history, and context.

An educational self-check does something else, and does it well: it helps you sort out what you are feeling, tell exhaustion apart from mental distance, and arrive at that appointment with something specific in hand instead of "I've been off for months". That is a good starting point. It is not a diagnosis.

If you work in healthcare

The BAT-12 works for any job. The platform was written with people who care for others in mind — nursing, medicine, support staff — because those are the shifts where burnout gets normalised and named late.

The course includes a lesson on burnout: its three signals, how it differs from depression and from moral injury, and where recovery begins.

Privacy

Your answers stay in your browser, on your device. Nobody else reads them, and that is why you can answer honestly — which is the only way a self-check is worth anything. The details are in Privacy.

The instruments are recommended from 18.

Instrument and source. The twelve items are the official BAT-12, reproduced without modification. The BAT is free to use and citing it is a condition of that licence:

Pensatorium adds a proprietary attribution module (system demands / personal patterns) that is still undergoing validation and is shown as a coarse band, not a fine score. It is not part of the BAT-12.
