How to talk to someone who’s struggling

Validate and listen, instead of minimizing or fixing

What you learn hereChoose responses that validate and listen (instead of minimizing or “fixing”), and ask directly and safely about risk when needed.

Someone close tells you: 'nothing matters anymore.' The first impulse is to fix it. Does that really help?

Two paths face their pain: validate, acknowledge what they feel; or minimize it and try to fix it.

'Stay positive,' 'others have it worse': so-called toxic positivity — replies that invalidate and silence them.

They tell you: 'I'm sinking, I can't cope.' Which reply validates and opens instead of closing?

If you fear for their life, ask plainly: 'are you thinking of taking your life?' Asking won't plant the idea.

Validate, don't fix. Ask without fear. And know when the weight is beyond you: hand off to real help.
